I received information about HHStudy program. It looked like a great opportunity for me to explore China!
I then applied online and got a quick reply.
We arranged time for a Skype interview. The LCC was warm and supportive over the phone.
After the phone conversation, I followed her advice and quickly prepared all of my application materials. I was pretty eager to go to China.
HHS then sent me a profile of my future host family. I was impressed by their warm and friendly appearance, and had a chance to confirm this through a family-to-family Skype meeting.
After the Skype meeting, I was confident that this was the family for me. I submitted the remaining application materials and signed the contract the next morning.
My LCC sent me an invitation letter and soon afterward I received my Chinese visa. I booked the flight tickets and packed my luggage. China, here I come!
After a long flight across the Pacific Ocean, I was greeted at airport with a big hug from my LCC and host family. This was just what I needed after 14-hour flight.
Everything in China is so new and exciting. After overcoming the jet lag, I travelled to so many cool places around the city with friends. I was surprised at how accustomed they already were to living in China. They taught me the ups and downs of living in China. For example, I learned how to use chopsticks to eat baozi for the first time, as well as how crowed the public transportation can be here. This week was definitely a time for discovery.
My first Chinese classes weren’t anything to write home about. My Chinese characters weren’t the prettiest the first time around. But I picked up on the language very quickly.
My host kid and I have an interesting relationship. We teach each other our respective languages, but she always loves to compete with me on who learns the fastest.
My host family and I took me with them on vacation to explore China. I had the chance to take many beautiful pictures.
But honestly, the culture shock my LCCs have warned me about is starting to reveal itself. Man…there are definitely some things that I would like to discuss with my host family. Fortunately my LCCs are there to support me every step of the way.
During my stay in China, I made many good friends. We did a lot of crazy things together.
HHS organized many activities that allowed us to better understand this amazing city.
Time really passes by so fast! I can’t believe my program is already coming to an end. I bought lots of gifts for my friends and family, but if only I had a magic suitcase to fit all of these amazing memories of my time here in China.
The day that I left was very emotional. I cried went my host child said he would visit me in Canada when he grows up. I also promised then I would visit again, but it isn’t certain. No matter what, I will never forget what an awesome family I have here in China.
Thank you everyone for making my time here in China a memorable one. I will remember the warmth and kindness you all showed me through thick and thin. Though I am leaving China, my experience here has made me a stronger and more confident person.
